Located centrally in the southern half of Siberut, the Kulukubuk waterfall near the village of Rokdog, with its crystal clear and cool waters, is a beautiful and quiet place to escape the tropical heat and experience Siberut’s natural forests. The following describes our day trip to it on our motorcycles in February 2022, when the surrounding infrastructure had fallen into disrepair. In the time since, it has slowly been fixed up.

Even when staying in Padang just as a jumping off point to visit somewhere else in West Sumatra, you should give the market, or old town a visit. It is worth it just to experience the minang food culture at dinner time, but there’s much more to see.
Pasar Raya
Padang’s heart, at the northern end of its old town Pasar Raya is the traditional and the biggest market of the city. At Pasar Raya you won’t find many tourists, the few that usually go there mostly disappear in the masses of locals that visit the market at any time until closing. The main parts of it are the market halls along Jalan Pasar Raya and Jalan Sandang Pangan Pasar, though it extends further along the many sideroads. [Read More…]

If you want to go to the Mentawais you won’t really be able to get around taking a ferry to get to them. There are three main options, though only one advertises itself to western tourists.
This blog post will tell you about transportation to the Mentawais and touch a little on getting around on and in between the islands. If it leaves you wanting more, consider contacting Robi or Ade through the Guides page or by clicking their names, they’ll be able to supply you with all the up-to-date information, help you with ferries on location and provide transportation with small crafts when on the islands.

What major airport to connect flights at?
The two most common airports western travelers will encounter when flying to Indonesia are Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta(CGK) and Denpasar’s Ngurah Rai(DPS). However, unless you’re planning to also stay in Bali, flying to Denpasar is probably not your best option, as there are no direct flights to Padang. The better option by far will be traveling via Jakarta, where you’ll be spoiled for choice with flights and airlines bringing you to Padang. [Read More…]
